A Day in The Life from Will

January 24th, 2008 · No Comments

Wow. Today has been hectic. I promised a post about Venture Capital and Private Equity. That is going to come tomorrow. Here’s why:

Let’s talk about life as an MBA. Fortunately, we didn’t have school yesterday because of MLK day. Nice, you say? Well, it was. But, oh boy, did that change. And this week shows no signs of letting up.

Today I got up about 9AM. That may seem late to you. Just you wait… At 10AM I had a meeting downtown with a guy that I intern with. Before school started in August, I moved down and got an internship. I had the summer free, so I figured it would be a good idea. It was. I still work with Chris at voodooventures.com to this day. In fact he’s offered me paying work, which is helping with my tuition. Chris runs and outsourcing business among other things. We met with his team in Russia via videoconference. We designed our new product offering and polished off a new website for launch.

I left already late for another meeting with Mauricio Gonzalez, the director of International Business – Latin America. He also teaches Global Leadership II that is a required course.

My group has been assigned the first case for his class. Since we’re going first he offered to help us out a little bit by hinting around about his preferences for case analysis. Allison my teammate came along. I made her wait a half hour on me because I was late (sorry Allison!)

With that finally over, I grabbed a bite to eat with some friends at the University Center, before hopping into another meeting with my entire group. I had to tell them what Mauricio told us, so that we could formulate the 10-page paper due Monday and the power point that we’ll have to present to the class. I signed our team up for some project management software (basecamp), because we have issues sometimes passing files and such back and forth.

By 4PM, I had to start on the Accounting problem set. It’s due this morning. I had heard it was a doozy. Surely enough 7 hours and 15 phone calls to classmates later, I finished. That also included a stunning dinner of Ramen, and 6 calls to my girlfriend speculating on whether or not I’d be able to come over.

Fortunately for me, I did all the reading for all 4 classes I have tomorrow early, because had I not I’d be up the creek.

Now, did you notice what wasn’t in there? A single class.

Tomorrow I have 4 classes, 3 meetings, and a lunch. My day starts at 7AM and I won’t be able to leave school until 9:15PM.

I am not whining. This is the best it’s ever been in my life. I meet amazing people, work on amazing things and its mostly because of all the opportunities the school has given me. I’ll tell you when I don’t like something about the school, because those things do exist. But overall… we don’t mess around at Tulane. You could coast through and not do much, but why? I am getting my thumb in every pie I can.

Fortunately, we get free WSJs and most of the class has a sense of humor.
