I received the following from a colleague:
As someone who has visited China and has many Chinese friends I was very disturbed by the Professor Biteman's interpretation of China and its culture. He spent the class reminding students how important it is to be sensitive to Chinese culture, while he was not sensitive to his students in his own classroom. If a person claims to be an China expert, I believe they should be required to understand at least part of the language. Chinese language is a big part of its culture, the sheer fact that Biteman doesn't understands the language make me question his credibility as an expert. At the end of the class, I felt that no student was more prepared to go to China, in fact they were more likely less prepared. Biteman's scare tactics and talks about execution simply left students confused and worried rather than intrigued about China.
Yeah, the Saturday class didn’t go so well. That’s ok, if you’ll recall from my final class post regarding our Paris excursion it’s always nice to get a different perspective on how things work.
