First Semester Recap from Will!

January 15th, 2008 · No Comments

So here is my recap of the first semester as short as possible:

We started out with a week of extreme orientation. We called it extreme orientation because the admissions office had us from 8 A.M. well into dinner time for a solid week. There were 70ish new faces and it was much like freshmen year of undergrad. Everyone was a little tense and awkward.

If I can say anything, they fed us extremely well. I had like no groceries the entire orientation, because they fed us so much. Lots of socials and frankly, by the end of it I was ready to stop socializing and learn something. We met alumni, went bowling, painted a stadium and the list goes on.

Famous last words: The first semester of business school is not easy; fortunately, it’s not hard either. It is, however, very time consuming. It’s two 7-week sessions with 4 classes in each. You cover the basics at a high rate of speed. That means you aren’t even at the school 3 weeks before you’ll get your first set of mid-terms. I am going to talk about each professor later, but to keep this short, I just want to give you a general overview.

Expect to spend several evenings at the library. Expect to read a lot and do lots of practice problems for the math stuff. Expect to have way too much material thrown at you. Expect to freak out and feel burnt out at least 2-3 times. They’ll make you do a lot of group work. Expect to get frustrated with that too.

Above and beyond all you’ll have at least one class that will make you feel helpless. Every year there is apparently a teacher that everyone hates. That happens.

Socially, everyone is sort of thrown together like freshmen year of undergrad. Remember all of that? Surprisingly, it all happens again.

Then you start all over again with all the same stress for another 7 weeks. Finally in December it’s over and you wonder where all the time went, but when you open the newspaper you understand everything in a way you didn’t before… you won’t regret it.

Stay tuned tomorrow for my top 5 of the first semester!
