So, the graduate business building is brand new. The photos on the freeman website don’t do us justice, so I won’t link them. But, some of the print materials you’ll receive in the mail, if you contact us, will give you a great picture about what the new building is like. It’s awesome, because there are plasma screen T.V.s everywhere, which most people use to watch espn endlessly, but can also be used for cartoons and the world cup games! The whole campus is on wireless, which is also awesome. We have comfy leather couches everywhere, our own conference rooms for meetings, tons of rooms with projectors, cozy stadium classrooms with tons of connections and stuff and a live trading floor. Also, the building itself is architecturally wonderful and is decorated with famous prints from local artists.
Anyways, the world is the internet, believe me, I am an internet consultant. You will use your laptop more than your feet at the business school, but turning off the laptop is also important.
The first semester I tried to multi-task paying bills, bidding on ebay crap, looking for stuff. Most people spent a lot of time on facebook. In fact you could stand at the back of the classroom most times and count at least 15 people playing on facebook. My point is now that it’s the second semester, there are no more laptops in class, at least not yet. Why? Because now we’re picking what we want to take and things are really getting interesting.
Laptops are fun. Knowing when to close them is doubly important. See you tomorrow!

Speaking of laptops… Do you use many programs other than Word and Excel when doing work/completing projects? I’m trying to figure out if I can get by using my Mac or if I would have to switch over to a PC.
Thanks,
Eric

I mostly use Word for notetaking, some students use Onenote. For finance classes, Excel is a must. Only for the stats class does running Excel inside of windows matter (or in a Virtualized Mac environment). For the rest of the finance classes, Mac Excel is fine, although I heard they got rid of macros, so some of the more in-depth classes may need Windows Excel.
I use Powerpoint for presentations, but I’m betting in the future students will use other open source/online presentation tools (Zoho/Google Apps, etc.)
Bottom line: as long as your Mac supports BootCamp, you’ll be fine. You will need Windows Excel at least once for Stats (because of a random seed problem)

Eric,
I have an old Ibook. I made it through stats and everything else so far. Macros don’t always work and I am only a first year, but I have found professors willing to work with me.
I am not the only one. There is a steady group of us old Mac users. Brigham Hall is the only one thus far who is doing boot camp virtualized Mac environment. He has absolutely no problems.
My opinion is don’t buy a worse computer (PC) because the business school isn’t integrated. But that is just my very slanted view
Will
