I report the good as well as the bad here…no blinders.
MSNBC’s reporting that a local NOPD police officer was shot/killed yesterday. This doesn’t mean New Orleans is any more or less safe…these things (unfortunately) happen in big/small cities everywhere.
I can tell you that the police integration between the NOPD, TUPD (Tulane) and LOPD (Loyola) departments is _very_ tight. The three departments held a town hall meeting a few weeks ago about crime around the campuses, there are rides/escorts available till some crazy early hour (3-4am?) and officers are always visible on campus…mostly ticketing students’ cars (hey you gotta pay the rent somehow).
Bottom line: there’s crime here, we know it, and we’re doing more and more to fight it. The best tip I can give any prospective/current student is not to walk around drunk at night. If you do get drunk, walk around in a drunken group, not by yourself. Don’t cut across a dark field/alley/park to save yourself 5 minutes on your way home. Pretty simple stuff, but you’d be surprised at how many students flip on the stupid switch after 9pm Thurs-Sat.
OK - enough parenting. Back to the fun! My career is waiting only a few short months away!

I heard this morning on the radio that the officer was 2 months pregnant. It’s such a shame. Take the advice that has been given. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
