A prospective student on the Tulane Yahoo Group (contact me if you want access) asked about the curriculum for the optional summer session classes offered by the Freeman School. These classes are designed to help your brain shift back into school mode, get reintroduced to accounting, statistics, cases, etc. For someone like me who had been in the working world for over three years (the last math class I took was my Sophomore year in college), the summer session proved immensely valuable. Abe, a first year MBA gave some insight to the program along with Katie Enos, an Admissions Counselor at Tulane:
Abe writes:
We had three courses, a Financial Accounting course, a course called
Thinking Quantitatively, and a Business Cases course. I studied
Business Administration as an undergrad so these were all refreshers
for me, but I would recommend them to anyone. They were a great way
to get back into the routine of school, I got to refresh my memory on
things like LIFO and FIFO, and you get to know the people in the
summer session very well. The humor of Russ Robins is great, Beau
Parent is a legend in New Orleans, and the cases course is very
challenging if not too short.
For international students there is a communications course but I’m
not familiar with that one so I’m sorry I can’t answer any questions
for you on that one.
Definitely come into town, get to know New Orleans, your classmates,
professors, and get used to taking classes again while there is not
any pressure. I hope this helps answer some questions, if not the
one about the communications course.

Katie says:
The Management Communication course is a preparatory course to prepare
international students for the communication demands of the program by
improving written and oral communication skills in a smaller, more laid
back setting. The MCOM course is free of charge. Abe did a great job
of explaining the summer intensive. There are basically three courses
offered: intro to business accounting, intro to business stats/excel
spreadsheet skills, and intro to the case study method taught by core
faculty. It is a wonderful transition from work life to school life.
The summer intensive is required for some students, but is open to all
students. We will be posting the tentative summer intensive schedule on
the Admitted Student website this week,
http://www.freeman.tulane.edu/admitted/mba.htm The cost is $750 for all
three courses; however, we disburse your $800 deposit to your account
and it applies toward the cost of the program. If you have any
questions regarding the summer programs or you would like to sign up to
attend any of the courses, please contact me at katie_enos@tulanemba.org.
