The flood.

You might ought to know some endearing facts about our fair city:

It floods. Today it’s going to rain all day. I had to take my car to the shop this morning and on the walk home, my shoes got soaked and my pants and generally the rest of me too. It rains here. And by rains I mean 3-4 inches a day sometimes. Today they are predicting 3 inches throughout the day.

What this means: Nothing serious really. It means that you ought to invest in a fleet of umbrellas and a set of galoshes. A raincoat might also be handy. My house is dry so don’t worry about that, but I did have to walk home strategically to avoid the flash floods in the streets that can get a foot deep in places. It’s quite endearing to me. I like to see that a big rain comes and washes everything away. No one is in danger and as long as you didn’t park your car in a flood area, then you’re fine. All the houses are raised here at least a foot or two, which means that there is no worry.

What if another hurricane comes? Well if there is one thing the business school has taught me, it’s to look at the numbers. And the numbers state simply that New Orleans experiences a major flood every 80 years and a minor flood every 11. Now we get torrential downpours on a regular basis… even twice a month during the wet season. That’s right. We do actually have a wet season. It gets really really wet, but what can I say… then the sun comes out and dries up all the rain and the itsy bitsy spider goes up the spout again ;) I love New Orleans. Anyone who has lived here for longer than a year or two knows that this place is special and after you leave, you’ll always wished that you lived here. Because we have personality, flavor and charm. In your face, nay-sayers. It’s just because you don’t know what you’re missing. We have something that no-one else in the US has. We’ve got history, culture, perserverence and monsoons.

Have a nice day. I am going to study in the safe dryness of my bed.
