Want an iPod? Leave a Comment!

As I’m sure you’re aware, it’s the height of admissions season. The Admissions Office is a pretty big supporter of the blog, for obvious reasons. Note I said supporter and not contributor – what you read here is the straight dish, what does faux news call it, the no spin zone – well we’re even better than that!

Anyway, Bill Sandefer (Director of Graduate Admissions) and I were discussing a way to get more people who read the blog interested in the Freeman School. Since Bill has money and I have time (ok, I have neither time or money but it sounds better) I proposed we run a contest to elicit more comments/questions/feedback about the blog and the Freeman School itself.

So here I am with 10 iPod Nano’s and 3 80gb Video Ipods, needing to give them away. I figure I’ll give away a Nano per week and and Ipod per month…starting this week! Here’s how the contest will work:

Nano’s: to be eligible to win a nano, all you have to do is reply to any of the posts here at tulanemba.org, or email me with a question, or reply to the contact form below. You may leave as many comments/emails as you want per day, but only one entry per day per person will be counted. Make sure your question/comment is appropriate, no swearing, no posts saying: “SMU Rules!” or the like. And sorry, if you’re already in bschool, you’re out too - go buy an iPod with that 6-figure salary!!!

At the end of each week (Sunday), I’ll download the range of comment numbers into Excel (all comments are numbered sequentially so for example, if the comments for this week ranged from 100-200, the numbers 100-200 get dumped into a spreadsheet) and then run a random number generator [RANDBETWEEN or something similar] on a number of cells equal to the number of comments received and specify the range of random numbers output to fall within the range of comment numbers for that week. The winner will be the row corresponding to the day of the month (for example this Sunday is the 18th, so I’ll look at the 18th row). I’ll also filer out any daily duplicate commenters before running the random number generator. Those of you who emailed me directly or left a comment via the Contact form below I’ll just add a dummy comment number for you.

For the iPod video’s I’ll throw everyone’s comments/emails for the prior month in one big pot and do the same calculation as above.

The Admissions Office also armed me with a bunch of stickers - and I’m lookin to give those away to whomever wants one. Seriously, they’re propping up my couch, under my bed and in my freezer. REQUEST ONE SO I CAN GET MY HOUSE BACK!!! Just leave your address with the rest of your comment, I’ll make sure to edit it out before publishing it to the world.

Sound overly complicated – it is. Sound like something a freshly-minted MBA would propose to justify his/her overly inflated salary? Well there you go. Now get commentin!

Nice blog… I’m an alum. from 2004 who follows a lot of New Orleans blogs, and it’s nice to finally find one that keeps track of Tulane. Great job -

I have enjoyed this blog since becoming aware of it 6 months ago.

Currently a 2009 Tulane EMBA from the Houston campus (Stewart Center for Exec. Edu.).

I wonder, what are the chances of establishing a greater connection between those pursuing MBAs in Houston and in New Orleans…

There appears to be a disconnect between the campuses in terms of active communication, planned events, etc. Realizing that there are some challenges here, it would be great to have a solid connection with my co-horts/counterparts in New Orleans, be that full time MBA, PMBA or EMBA.

I don’t suppose that there are any issues with lack of deference between the two campuses or the MBA pursuit (program) as we are all ‘Tulane’ and should represent both the school and the MBA program to industries and the like with excellence. They should know that they have an outstanding employee/leader on their staff/team because that graduate is from Tulane.

I would as a Tulane EMBA in Houston ensure that the path to an opportunity in Houston or anywhere else is just a little easier for my fellow Tulane alum regardless of what campus the degree was pursued. Anyone want to weigh in here?

I’d be happy to champion any efforts from the Houston side…

One of a kind blog! Thanks for your time and valuable information. I truly am excited to see this blog expand with tools and great resources. I will do my best to spread the news about this site to friends, colleages, and even family.

I too would like a Tuleane MBA sticker!

I’ll keep my fingers crossed about the iPod. Unfortunately, I don’t have one and figured nows the chance for me to support a great site and even win an iPod that I would love to have!

    Best Wishes,

    Charlie

when I am really bored and looking to kill time, I ocaasionally meander across the many wire / fiber connections that lead me to this blog. I may then spend a few minutes perusing the content. When I see the opportunity to win free crap, I rarely fail to review what needs to be done to qualify. Imagine the Joy in myheart when I saw that all I need to do is post a comment! Consider it done! I’d like to thank my imagination, the producer of this blog, and Chance for this magnificent iPod that I predict I may win.

I just took the GMAT and will be completing my application over Christmas break. I’m from New Orleans and really looking forward to going to Tulane next year if I’m accepted. Will I be able to visit the campus at all with an admissions counselor over the break? Can you please email me or put me in touch with the right person? Thanks.

    Hey Mel,

Glad you’re applying! I’ll forward your request onto the admissions folks. I know that the admissions director, Bill Sandefer, is going with us to Paris, but I’ll see if anyone else is around.

Shoot me an email to joel@tulanemba.org and I’ll get a sticker out to you.

    Hi,

I got an automated mail asking me to check out this blog. I’ve been doing the usual see-saw of when I should leave my job (with a meagre salary) and go and do an MBA. More importantly, I have no idea where to go.

This blog helped me a lot in deciding where I want to go. It helped to narrow down the list and beleive me Tulane is definitely on the top.

By the way, I’m an intenational student so is there any way that I can talk to an admissions counsellor. Do international students have that privilege? I’d love to talk to professors and students!!!

    Do let me know.

    Happy Holidays!!!

So are the video iPod’s still out there Joel? Did I win anything? Hehehe, hope you’re having a great break, and keep up the good work.

I received a recruiting email and ended up following the link after reading about the iPod giveaway. Anyway, great blog…I’ll spend some time on the rest of the site now.

  • Julia // Jan 4, 2008 at 1:20 am

Thanks for such an informative blog! I wasn’t going to look at Tulane until a recruiting email I recently received. It sounds like I great program, I will be looking into it further!

Interesting blog, it has been helpful in learning about Tulane. I have never been to New Orleans. The program looks great but I would like to visit the campus.

The site is amazing. It provides info which is precious & helpful 4 study. Thanks

  • Ben // Feb 7, 2008 at 3:10 pm

I am impressed by both the blog and the promotion of it. I took the GMAT to apply specifically to some local schools around Boston, and I was surprised by the amount of mail I got after taking the GMAT, asking for my attention to other b-school programs. Tulane is one of the only schools to contact me that has actually gotten my attention so far, and I am happy to see social media being employed. As a marketing professional I think a modern approach such as this lends a lot of credence to a school.

  • joel // Feb 7, 2008 at 3:41 pm

Thanks Ben. Glad to know it’s working. I’m not a marketing pro but i love using web tech to get the message out/make life easier. The lines long ago started to blur…can’t wait to see what’s next! Good luck w/the MBA process. –Joel

This blog is pretty cool!! How would you guys describe Tulane’s Business School if you were talking to a guy trying to decide between NYU (I live in NYC) and Tulane? Whats the average GMAT score needed to get accepted?

  • joel // Mar 12, 2008 at 1:29 pm

Ari - glad you like the blog. The median GMAT score is around 630 I believe, but there are kids here who have gotten in +- 100 points. I believe there’s a bunch of factors outside of GMAT/GPA which help to influence a prospective student’s decision on which school to attend. Tulane has small classes, is highly ranked in Finance and Energy, has tight connections to many schools in Latin America and is located in an awesome city. New York is a totally different atmosphere with different pluses and minuses: NYC has the subway, we’ve got the street cars. NYC has the West and East Villages, we’ve got the Quarter. NYC’s bars close (well most of em), ours don’t! Recruiting wise, companies find it easier to go to NYC because they’re already there, and there’s a ton of bschools within 100 miles. Tulane’s MBA’s often have to travel to NYC, SFO, ORD, etc. to meet with recruiters. That’s not to say Citi, Bear Energy, Goldman, Morgan, etc. don’t have relationships or come down to interview, some of them do. But it’s just easier for them to see more MBA’s from their home region.

There’s a ton of other factors that go into the decision, but I hope this helps.

    -Joel
